5 Most commonly seen flowers in Myanmar

Myanmar is renowned for its rich diversity of flora and fauna. The people of Myanmar take great pride in this natural wealth, viewing it as a national asset and a vital part of their identity. Among the most iconic elements of this biodiversity are the beautiful and culturally significant flowers that flourish throughout the country. Here, I would like to highlight a few of the most renowned flowers commonly found in Myanmar, along with the reasons why they hold a special place in the hearts of the people.

ပိတောက် Padauk – Burmese Rosewood

Padauk is often considered the national flower of Myanmar and is widely recognized for its vibrant yellow blossoms. These flowers are especially prevalent during the Thingyan Festival, which marks the Myanmar New Year in April. The vibrant, pea-like flowers are worn by women in their hair and are also used as decorations during the water festival. Padauk trees are commonly found along the roadsides throughout Myanmar, where they are carefully tended to and highly valued by the community. Their bright yellow flowers symbolize joy and celebration.

စံပယ် Sabei  – Jasmine

Though you may not find large jasmine trees growing along every street like Padauk, jasmine flowers are a common sight in Myanmar. These small but resilient flowers are often sold by street vendors. Known for their slightly sweet fragrance, jasmine flowers are traditionally used as offerings to Buddha, particularly in Buddhist-majority Myanmar, where they hold deep spiritual significance. People also use them to decorate traditional and religious events. Interestingly, "Sabei" is also a common name for girls in Myanmar, further linking the flower to local culture.

ကြာ Kyar  – Lotus

The lotus holds profound spiritual significance in Myanmar, particularly within Buddhist culture, where it is a symbol of purity, enlightenment, and rebirth. Although lotus flowers are not typically sold on the streets, they can often be found at Buddhist temples, where vendors sell beautiful pink and white blossoms. The sight of a lotus flower blooming in water has come to represent spiritual growth and inner peace for many people in Myanmar.

နှင်းဆီ Hnin Si  – Rose

Roses, like in many other countries, are a symbol of romantic love in Myanmar. In recent years, there has been a rise in the culture of surprise gifts, and bouquets of roses, in various colors, have become a popular choice for such occasions. Whether given as gifts for loved ones or used in festive celebrations, roses have become deeply embedded in Myanmar's modern gift-giving culture.

စကား Sakar – Frangipani

Frangipani flowers, with their sweet fragrance and delicate appearance, are commonly found in the backyards of many homes throughout Myanmar. These white flowers are sometimes used for medicinal purposes; the flowers and leaves are blanched in hot water and used in salads for digestive benefits. Additionally, frangipani flowers are associated with peace and are often seen in religious and cultural contexts. Their beauty and fragrance make them a cherished part of Myanmar's natural landscape.

These flowers are more than just beautiful sights; they hold deep cultural and spiritual meaning in Myanmar. Do you have any flowers which reminds you of Myanmar? Comment down below and share your story!
